In 1989 crack cocaine was beginning to appear in Britain. The scourge of communities in the US there was a genuine fear of it taking hold in the UK.
I travelled to Liverpool where I meet with two “street girls”, one still a teenager and the other in her early 20’s. They let us photograph them preparing and smoking crack, and then went out to buy heroin to maintain their addiction.
Because the veins in their arms were so damaged they resorted to injecting into their hands. When the needle slipped out of the vein a “mouse” formed – a small lump caused by liquid beneath the surface of the skin.
They were so young and vulnerable, taking drugs was the only way they could get through a night working the streets.
