In 1994 I followed Nelson Mandela as he campaigned to become president of South Africa. It was an extraordinary time, and his ultimate victory was never really in any doubt.
Although there the constant possibility that there would be an attempt made on his life he travelled the country and was always met with a rapturous welcome. The most astonishingly personable man, he radiated energy and kindness.
Near Durban I waited in a township for his convoy to arrive, along with a huge media scrum. When his car pulled in it was mobbed, yet I was in the perfect position for this picture. My colleague immediately next to me wasn’t so lucky when Mandela’s car parked on his foot. Needless to say, this wasn’t a shot he got.
