In a hospital in central London, a highly specialised team of NHS staff is marshalling everything it has to save the lives of some of the country’s sickest Covid patients.
In the Royal Brompton Hospital, where patients whose lungs have been ravaged by SARS-CoV-2 are receiving the highest-tech, they are given a last-chance option for life support.
On June 1, there were 13 patients being kept alive using ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) circuits at the Brompton. These are patients with respiratory failure, for whom all other options have failed.
